The Vision:
This conference is a ‘revitalization’ of the former Rocky Mountain Hospital Medicine Symposium, which was started by our very own executive director Dr. Glasheen in 2002, and was held yearly in Denver, Colorado up until 2018. After a brief hiatus, the COVID-19 pandemic brought to light the importance of continuing this regional conference. However – we also realized that we would be remiss to ignore the social, cultural, and political events over recent years which have directly impacted our medical practice – and brought to light inequities and disparities in practice which have existed for centuries.
In light of this – we have worked with local and regional leaders to cultivate the 2021 Hospital Medicine Summit of the Rockies. Our goal with this conference is to pair high-quality clinical updates with themes in diversity, equity, and inclusion. While the medical community and community at large is increasingly focusing on this topic – often having didactic sessions or ‘tracks,’ related to DEI in conferences and education, which we applaud and celebrate. However, we also recognize that principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion should be woven into all of our daily practice – recognizing potential impacts on the care we deliver to our patients, the way we perceive our colleagues, variations in professional advancement opportunities, and every other aspect of our profession. Therefore, we have asked each speaker to consider principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion – and include clinical pearls within their respective topics pertaining to these. We hope that this will not only provide attendees with valuable clinical updates in hospital medicine but will also be a small step in transforming the way that we think.
Conference Content:
National Leaders in Hospital Medicine have gathered together to create a robust curriculum ranging from Hospital Medicine ‘favorites,’ like ‘Things We Do for No Reason; and ‘Medical Literature 2020: Turning Evidence Into Practice,’ to things like “Health Impacts of Climate Change,” and “Hospital Medicine in Emergency Preparedness.” We hosted a poster session, where we will hear a myriad of clinical vignettes and research projects from residents, medical students, and advance practice providers in the rocky mountain region. Given the virtual nature of this year’s conference – we chose to provide 30-minute presentations, with 5 minutes of Q&A, with hopes to keep attendees excited and engaged in this new platform.
