His interest and research focus are on glomerulonephritis and the immune response during these diseases to help develop novel treatments. “Dr. D,” as his patients know him, does clinical work as a Nephrologist at Denver Health while performing basic science research and helping with clinical trials at the University of Colorado.

Dr. McMahon received his B.S. in Chemistry at Boston College prior to graduating from SUNY-Upstate Medical University at Syracuse in 2001. He then moved to the University of Rochester where he completed residency in internal medicine. While there Dr. McMahon completed chief residency, and later fellowship in hematology. Beginning in 2007, Dr. McMahon, was on faculty at Northwestern University as an Assistant Professor and later promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine. He joined the University of Colorado’s Division of Hematology in 2016. His clinical interests are in thrombotic disorders and myeloproliferative neoplasms, he is also heavily involved in medical education.

Dr. Maw is an academic hospitalist with expertise in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and Evidenced Based Medicine. She began her career as a clinical educator at New York Presbyterian - Weill Cornell Medical Center where she completed residency. Early in her career she pursued additional training in POCUS and EBM, completing the American College of Chest Physician POCUS certificate program and a Master of Science in Biostatistics. She founded and directed the Weill Cornell Point of Care Ultrasound Internal Medicine Program from 2012-2016, teaching POCUS to medical residents and faculty. Upon arriving at the University of Colorado, she transitioned her academic focus to health services research. Her research is currently supported by the National Institutes of Health and is focused on optimizing health outcomes in hospitalized patients using POCUS. She also continues to teach POCUS to faculty on a national level through SHM's annual pre-course and is the Director of the SHM Rocky Mountain Chapter Certificate of Completion POCUS course. Locally, she teaches POCUS to faculty, medical students, and trainees from multiple specialties.

Noelle M. Northcutt, MD, FACP is an Academic Hospitalist at Denver Health Hospital in Denver, Colorado. She became the Director of Point of Care Ultrasound for the Division of Hospital Medicine at Denver Health after completing a Fellowship in Bedside Ultrasound with Denver Health Emergency Medicine. In addition to point-of-care ultrasound she enjoys teaching bedside communication to residents and students.

Outside of the hospital, she pursues a life in the outdoors hiking and backpacking with her wife, playing with her dogs, and loves to DIY.

Mel L. Anderson, MD, MACP is an Academic Hospitalist and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM). He serves as the National Program Director for Hospital Medicine in the Veterans Healthcare Administration. Dr. Anderson graduated AOA from the University of Texas, Houston, School of Medicine (now the McGovern School of Medicine) in 1994 and completed Internal Medicine residency and a Chief Residency at the David Grant USAF Medical Center in California. Dr. Anderson served for many years as an associate program director and interim program director for the UCSOM Internal Medicine Residency Program, where he founded and led the Clinician/Educator residency pathway and mentored hundreds of future internists. His academic interests center on bedside clinical teaching, faculty development, and teaching and implementing Evidence-Based Medicine. He loves spending time with spouse and best friend Maria, daughter Claire, and friends and family.

Cason Pierce, MD, MA, FHM is an academic hospitalist at Denver Health, a medical Educator, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM). He attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern, and he completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. In 2012, he became a full-time hospitalist at Denver Health and a faculty member at CUSOM. He is a graduate of the CUSOM Teaching Scholars Program and is a member of its Academy of Medical Educators. In addition to being a full-time clinician, he has developed or co-developed courses for CUSOM students and residents on a hypothesis based physical exam and point-of-care ultrasound. He is a regular reviewer for the Journal of General Internal Medicine and the Journal of Hospital Medicine. His own publications include a Best Evidence in Medical Education review on effective clinical teaching strategies. He was a plenary speaker in 2015 for the Mountain West Society of General Internal Medicine annual meeting, and he has given an annual “Updates in Hospital Medicine” lecture to the Department of Family Medicine faculty at Denver Health since 2016.

Marisha Burden, MD, FACP, SFHM is the Division Head of Hospital Medicine and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Burden completed her undergraduate work at the University of Oklahoma and earned her medical degree at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine graduating with the honor of Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed her residency at the University of Colorado in the hospitalist training track. Dr. Burden’s interests include hospital systems improvement, which includes patient experience, patient flow, quality, and transitions of care and workforce related issues. She is also very interested in promoting gender equity and is a member of the Department of Medicine Program to Advance Gender Equity and the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) Equity in Recruitment Task Force. Dr. Burden is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine, the Association of Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine. She is also an active member of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and is a Senior Fellow of Hospital Medicine. She currently serves on the SHM Research Committee and is Executive Co-Chair for the Diversity and Inclusion Interest group. Dr. Burden speaks nationally on the topics of hospital systems improvements, clinical operations, and diversity and equity. She has given multiple talks or workshops at the SHM national conference.

Dr. Frank is the Associate Director for the Department of Medicine, a hospitalist, and the Medical Director of the Biocontainment Unit (BCU) at Denver Health and Hospital Authority, a level one trauma center affiliated with the University of Colorado. In her role as the medical director of BCU, she serves as the site Principal Investigator for the NIH-sponsored ACTT trial. Denver Health is one of the 10 Regional Emergent Special Pathogens Treatment Centers (RESPTCs) and BCU members are actively involved in National Ebola Training and Education Center (NETEC) and Special Pathogens Research Network (SPRN). She is also the Director for Faculty development and Advancement for the Division of Hospital Medicine and Associate Professor of Medicine for the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. Dr. Frank received her medical diploma from the University of Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina; completed a residency in Internal Medicine and another in Emergency Medicine in Argentina. She immigrated to the US in 2004 where she completed another Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Colorado joining as faculty after graduation. Her areas of interest include medical education and faculty advancement, emergent special pathogens and disaster preparedness and response.

Jason Persoff, MD, SFHM, is an internationally renowned storm chaser, father of three, husband to an amazing Kindergarten-teaching wife, erstwhile stand-up comedian, and contemporaneous Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado. Dr. Persoff was born and raised, and eventually left, Denver, Colorado, but not without first completing his B.S. in Medical Science and M.D. at the University of Colorado. He completed his internship, residency, and Chief Resident at Mayo Clinic Florida. He was one of the inaugural hospitalists at Mayo Clinic Florida, where he worked for 10 years on staff and received myriad teaching awards, including the distinction of Teacher of the Year for the institution. In 2011, Dr. Persoff joined the Hospital Medicine Group at University of Colorado where he is a nocturnist and educator. Each May he spends two weeks scouring the Great Plains using many of the same skills he uses in internal medicine—analyzing and interpreting subtle and system-wide weather physiology—to pursue severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. He has appeared in many TV specials (The Weather Channel, Discovery Channel, and The Learning Channel), and has appeared in myriad magazines and books. After chasing a tornado through Joplin, MO, in May, 2011, that resulted in mass destruction of that city, he responded to the disaster by going to the Freeman Health System emergency room and functioned as a hospitalist for the first day of the disaster. That experience fostered a lifelong research interest focusing on the role of hospitalists in responding to disaster. More recently that role transformed into a leadership position at preparation, response, and recovery for the University of Colorado Hospital and UC Health System during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Several of those experiences have resulted in publications in peer-reviewed journals and numerous blog posts. He is also known nationally for research in advanced cardiac resuscitation.

Following residency, Dr Andreoli held a faculty position at Rush University Medical Center, which has a very robust medical consult service whose daily census was typically over 100 patients. He moved to Denver in 2017 when he continued his Hospital Medicine career at Denver Health Medical Center with a faculty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He has been working closely with the surgical services to expand the scope of an already strong medical consult team at Denver Health. He is married and doing his best to teach his 3-year-old girl to ski, and to teach his 10-month-old girl to tolerate hour-long winter hikes.
